On July 5th 2013  Natural England announced that the proposed Mersey Narrows and North Wirral Foreshore Special Protection Area and Ramsar Site has been ratified by the Secretary of State.

This area includes East Hoyle Bank, Mockbeggar Wharf, Egremont Shore and embraces Seaforth Nature Reserve adjacent to the River Mersey.

These designations place an obligation upon the government to promote the conservation of the area, and to take steps to avoid deterioration of the habitats and disturbance of the species for which the area has been designated. The species qualifying are Bar-tailed godwit, Knot, Little gull and Common tern, both breeding and non-breeding.

The MECG welcomes these designations.
